Successful and unsuccessful techniques
Unsuccessful
- I have not found the larger telephoto lenses (say up to 200mm) so good. My 70-200 is a very conspicuous white metal lens with a massive lens hood and once its pointing at people they notice and react. A lot of shots of peoples' backs is not ideal and so I opted not to bother with these tele extremes for this assignment.
- I am mostly not happy with the image quality from a compact PAS so opted for a full size DSLR even though it makes you more obvious.
- There were a few potential subjects I saw but didn't manage to catch, including a stag party with the guys wearing tartan hats and fake orange hair. Maybe a bit more running might of helped!
Successful
- I had a nice bright day so opted for ISO 100 in the sun and ISO 200 for some of the more shaded areas. I then put the camera on Aperture Priority at f8 giving shutter speeds of 100th sec plus. I then just made slight adjustments of f stop up and down as needed. With evaluative metering this allowed for quick shots, forgoing any exposure compensation and relying on a little highlight recovery from the raw files later.
- By being in a busy tourist area with lots of people carrying cameras I mostly drew little attention.
- I opted for a zoom with a wide to semi tele range allowing for quick adjustments. The wider angles were good for putting people in context and allowed me to get really close.
