Exercise 19: A single figure small

For this first image I took advantage of a high vantage point and then waited for people to pass by. Mostly I had nobody or large groups so some patience was required. In this best of the set the boy dropped his ball and because there is a slight downward slope I immediately knew he would need to run after it, separating him from his family group. In addition to the boy there is also the ball and a bench making for an implied triangle. I also like the Y-shaped path, the path and then bench are the clues that this is a specific public space and not just some random piece of grassland. The shutter speed is slow enough to allow a little blurring of the motion making for an overall dynamic image.

By contrast, taken only a short distance away, is this more static image of the park which includes a lone lady sitting on a bench. She is in fact looking at a dog show that is taking place behind and below me. Again quick reflexes were required to get the shot between groups of people walking on the path in front and without drawing too much attention to the camera.

I then turned my attention from space to building, making use of Linlithgow Palace. In this first shot the man is perhaps not immediately obvious, once noted he helps set the scale on this imposing entrance wall. If he had been wearing lighter clothing he would have stood out better. Also I took this at a slight angle leaving the verticals on the building looking a little awkward.

I then went into the Palace's central courtyard and waited for visitors to come by. In this one the boy stands out as he is wearing red but being so small again adds to the feeling of scale and grandeur of the location.

And finally someone about to enter one of the stairways.

This did not prove too difficult an exercise but did require a level of anticipation and then some patience.
